For a long time, the message to young people was pretty simple. Go to college, get a degree, and everything else would fall into place. While that path is still the right choice for many people, I think more young professionals are realizing it is not the only path to a successful and rewarding career.
Over the last several years, I have seen more interest in skilled trades than ever before. People are starting to recognize that careers like electrical work, plumbing, HVAC, and construction offer real opportunities to build a great life. They also provide something many jobs cannot, which is the satisfaction of creating something tangible every day.
As someone who has spent more than a decade in the electrical industry, I think this renewed interest is one of the best things happening for both workers and our communities.
There Is Pride in Building Something Real
One of the reasons I love electrical work is because every day ends with something you can actually see. Maybe you wired a new home, upgraded a service panel, installed lighting, or helped a family safely power their home. Whatever the project is, you know your work made a difference.
That feeling is hard to replace.
At the end of the day, I can drive past a project months or years later and know I had a hand in building it. That gives you a sense of accomplishment that goes beyond a paycheck.
I think many young people are looking for careers with purpose. They want to know their work matters, and the trades provide that opportunity every single day.
You Get Paid to Learn
When I first entered the electrical trade, I started as a helper working on solar installations in Massachusetts. I did not know everything, and nobody expected me to. My job was to learn, work hard, and improve every day.
That is one of the biggest advantages of the trades. Instead of spending years in a classroom before entering the workforce, many apprentices are earning an income while gaining valuable experience.
You are learning directly from experienced professionals while building practical skills that stay with you for life.
There is tremendous value in that.
The Need for Skilled Workers Is Growing
Another reason young professionals are looking at the trades is simple. The demand is there.
Every community needs electricians. Homes need wiring. Businesses need upgrades. New construction continues to grow. Older buildings require maintenance and modernization. On top of that, we are seeing increasing demand for solar energy systems, electric vehicle chargers, battery storage, and smart home technology.
All of these advancements require skilled electricians.
Technology may change how we work, but it does not eliminate the need for qualified people who understand electrical systems and know how to install them safely.
Success Comes From Effort, Not Shortcuts
One thing I appreciate about the trades is that they reward effort.
Nobody cares where you came from or what obstacles you faced. What matters is whether you show up, work hard, and continue learning.
That was true for me throughout my career.
Like many people, I had challenges growing up. There were times when life could have gone in a very different direction. My parents divorced when I was young, my father struggled with alcoholism, and I did not graduate high school. Looking back, I know how easily I could have stayed on the wrong path.
Instead, I found an opportunity in the trades. I found mentors, developed discipline, and committed myself to becoming better every day.
That experience shaped who I am today.
Learning Never Stops
One thing I always tell people is that becoming an electrician is not the finish line. It is just the beginning.
Even after becoming a Master Electrician, I still spend time reading, learning, and staying current with changes in the industry. Electrical codes evolve. Technology changes. Customer needs continue to grow.
If you want to stay successful, you have to keep learning.
That mindset has helped me throughout my career, and it is something I encourage every young tradesperson to embrace.
The people who continue improving are the ones who build lasting careers.
Entrepreneurship Is Within Reach
Another reason I think the trades are attracting more young professionals is because they create opportunities for business ownership.
After years of working in the field, traveling with the union, and gaining experience across the country, I decided to start Rocky Coast Electric.
Launching a business was one of the biggest challenges of my career, but it was also one of the most rewarding. Every satisfied customer, every completed project, and every new opportunity reminds me why I took that step.
The trades can open doors far beyond working with tools. They can lead to leadership, management, entrepreneurship, and building something that lasts for generations.
Character Matters More Than Talent
If there is one lesson this career has taught me, it is that character matters more than talent.
You can teach someone how to wire a panel or install equipment. It is much harder to teach honesty, accountability, and work ethic.
Customers remember how you treated them. Employers remember whether they could count on you. Coworkers remember whether you helped solve problems or created them.
Your reputation becomes one of your greatest assets.
That is something every young person entering the trades should understand from day one.
Looking Ahead
I believe the future is bright for skilled trades. As our world becomes more connected and more dependent on electricity, the need for qualified professionals will only continue to grow.
For anyone considering this career, my advice is simple. Do not worry about having everything figured out before you begin. Focus on learning, showing up consistently, and giving your best effort every day.
The trades changed my life. They gave me a career, allowed me to support my family, and eventually gave me the opportunity to build my own business.
